As a small business owner, it’s easy to get caught up in client work, team management, deadlines, and the never-ending to-do list. Over the years, I’ve learned that structure and routine are essential—not just for productivity, but for my own well-being.
These are the non-negotiables I’ve worked into my schedule. They help me feel balanced, focused, and more present in both my work and personal life. I’m sharing them not because they’re the only way to do things, but because they’ve helped me tremendously. If you’re looking for ways to feel more grounded as a busy entrepreneur, maybe a few of these will resonate with you, too.
1. Daily Movement, Even if It’s Just 15 Minutes
Exercise doesn’t have to mean an hour at the gym. I aim to move my body every day, whether it’s a walk, a class at Soulbody Studios, or light stretching between meetings. Over the course of a week, I try to get in at least 2–3 hours of movement total.
2. Weekly Self-Care
Once a week, I commit to doing something just for myself. That might look like a facial, a massage, a hair blowout, or a lunch with a friend. These moments help me recharge and feel more like myself outside of my business owner role.
3. Professional Help Around the House
One of the best decisions I’ve made is hiring a home cleaning company. Delegating this task frees up time and mental space so I can focus on what matters most—both in business and at home.
4. Putting My Phone on Do Not Disturb After School
When my kids get home, I turn off notifications and put my phone on Do Not Disturb. It’s a simple habit that allows me to be more present during the short window of time we get together each day.
5. Monthly Date Nights
My husband and I prioritize monthly date nights. Scheduling them on the calendar ensures they actually happen, even during busy seasons. It’s one of the ways we stay connected amidst all the daily chaos.
6. Making the Beds Every Morning
This might seem small, but making the bed first thing in the morning gives me a sense of accomplishment and helps me start the day with intention.
7. Getting Outside for at Least 15 Minutes a Day
If the Florida weather cooperates, I make it a point to get outside daily. Whether I’m taking a walk or just sitting on the patio with a cup of coffee, it helps clear my mind and improves my focus for the rest of the day.
8. Reading for Growth and Pleasure
Reading is a non-negotiable for me. I balance professional development books with novels or lighter reads that help me unwind. It’s one of the few activities that helps me unplug and reset.
These non-negotiables aren’t revolutionary, but they are intentional—and they’ve made a big difference in my ability to run a business while still feeling like a whole person.
What about you? What habits or routines have you built into your week that help you stay grounded as a business owner or professional? I’d love to hear what’s working for you—or what you’re hoping to implement.
